PRAY FOR KENYA

And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment
Philippians 1:9

In 1963 Kenya obtained independence from British rule. Following 26 years of oppressive single-party rule, Kenya transitioned to a multiparty political system in 1991. In 2010, Kenyans held a referendum and passed a new constitution limiting presidential powers. In 2022, William Ruto became Kenya's fifth president.

Kenya's climate varies from tropical along the coast to temperate in the inland highlands to arid in the north and northeast. Low plains along the coast rise to the central highlands, which are bisected by the Great Rift Valley. Kenya’s national parks and game reserves have large numbers of wild animals, attracting foreign tourists. Millions of animals take part in the annual animal migration occurring between June and September.

Country Stats

Capital City:  Nairobi
Government: Unitary presidential republic
People Groups: 108 people groups (Joshua Project)
Population: 56,034,000 (Joshua Project)

Christians with a Muslim background in the northeast and coastal regions of Kenya live under constant threat of attack. Christians have been forced to flee their villages, and Islamic extremist group al-Shabab has infiltrated the local population to monitor Christians in those areas. Organized crime is also a serious problem. Corrupt officials often fail to take measures against persecutors—increasing the potential for further incidents against Christians. (From Open Doors.)

RiverLakes Church has partnered with International Christian Ministries (ICM) in Africa for over three decades. In Kenya there are now two campuses of the Africa Theological Seminary providing sound Biblical training, one in Kitale and one on Mt. Elgon. On the Mt. Elgon campus coffee is being grown and processed in hopes that the seminary can become financially self-sustaining.

How to Pray

  • Pray for the RCC/ICM partnership in Kenya to continue to  faithfully serve the nationals through the two campuses of the Africa Theological Seminary.
  • Pray for the persecution of our Kenyan brothers and sisters in Christ by Islamic radicals to stop, and for the Lord to sustain those who are being persecuted.
  • Pray for the Kenyan church leaders to possess a sound Biblical theology.
  • Pray that the Lord would bless the initiative on the Mt Elgon campus to grow and process coffee.
